A Conversation – Physician Wellness and Mental Illness in Physicians or Surgeons

Physicians and surgeons face a higher risk of experiencing mental illnesses such as anxiety, depression, substance use, or trauma-related disorders.

In this session, a panel of experts discuss key concepts about mental illness and occupational distress for physicians and surgeons, describe how occupational distress syndromes may threaten well-being, summarize how stigma and professional culture may undermine well-being, and describe concrete strategies and resources to support well-being.

*please note: this session specifically talks about suicide and suicidal ideation

An interactive workshop serving as an introductory guide to writing an Affirmation of Professional Calling (APC).

An APC is an overarching individualized statement of intention. It describes the professional mission of a physician which in turn drives not just what they do, but how they do it. It is created through a reflective process that results in an understanding of fundamental motivations and values, identification of work that is most engaging, and recognition of personal strengths.

Moving Physician Wellness Forward Through Leadership:
A Leadership Retreat

Leaders can play a crucial role in influencing wellness for those they lead by positively influencing group culture; promoting wellness; and enhancing engagement, trust, and psychological safety through compassion.

In this interactive retreat, participants are reminded about key concepts of physician wellness and are invited to engage in a series of reflection and discussion activities about their roles as leaders, the needs and priorities of their members, and potential strategies for how they can move physician wellness forward within their group.

Physician wellness is a responsibility shared by individual physicians, healthcare systems, and the profession of medicine.

This workshop aims to enhance literacy about how physicians’ work puts them at risk for being unwell and provides them with tools they can use to cope with the challenges of their work. Participants are also invited to reflect on how they are impacted by workplace stressors and what coping strategies or resilience practices they have used in response.

Career Transitions

Our proactive, structured, and human-centered program supports physicians as they navigate the complexities of change during transition periods.

We deliver facilitated small group sessions where attendees can provide and receive informal emotional support through the sharing of stories and experiences. These sessions help foster a culture where physicians can reflect, recalibrate, and reengage with their professional calling.
