Peer Support Program

A Team-Based, One-on-One, Physician-to-Physician Model
The Well Doc Initiative’s Peer Support Program helps interested groups of physicians (e.g., divisions, departments, community physicians, rural physicians) to develop, train, launch, and sustain their own formal one-on-one, physician-to-physician peer support team. The team is embedded and maintained within the physician group, led by a physician coordinator.

Our program uses a team-based model where the team is developed within a physician group who know each other and have a similar practice scope and setting. The “group” of physicians is self-defined and allows for flexibility.

Four-Step Process

The Well Doc Initiative guides interested groups through a Four-Step Process.

Step 1 Initial Consultation - 1-hour initial meeting with the group’s leadership aimed at sharing information about The Well Doc Initiative’s peer support model and ensure it is a fit for their group. This meeting also helps us understand your group and to discuss readiness, feasibility, and timelines.
Step 2 Information Session – if your group’s leadership chooses to proceed, then we will proceed with a 1.5-hour information session to facilitate the operationization of the peer support team.
Step 3 Formal Peer Support Team Training Workshop – a 4-hour workshop to prospective peer supporters, the physician coordinator, and the physician leaders from the group. This training enhances the literacy on peer support and upskills physicians of the role of a peer supporter.
Step 4 Support to Sustain Your Team – ongoing support to launch and sustain your team through membership in The Well Doc Initiative Peer Support Team Network. Being part of the network allows access to resources such as customizable tools, communication/promotional templates, newsletters, an online resource hub, and additional training opportunities (e.g., upskilling sessions, refresher courses, drop-in sessions).
